14th January 2012

Awful weather in Pembrokeshire prevented me from making an attempt to photograph the planet mercury during the New Year period but I was spurred on by the coming, tomorrow evening, of the next set of Stargazing Live programs to go out this evening to take a few photographs.

My first objective was to photograph Venus whilst there was still a little light in the sky. Venus has recently started to be visible in the western sky early in the evening.

Following that, I spent over an hour standing in sub-zero temperatures as I tried to capture enough images to create a picture of star trails above the railway viaduct at Ackworth. I actually collected 120 30-second images as I listened to the barking of foxes, the screeching of owls and unidentified rustling sounds coming from undergrowth on the railway embankment.
