Rookery at Hemsworth.

The first frog of the year appeared in my garden pond on the 6th. Things went quiet for a few days as heavy frosts left the pond covered in ice each morning for most of the week but mild weather this weekend allowed the frogs to become increasingly active. The first blob of frog-spawn was in the pond this morning and several frogs were croaking during the afternoon.

In Hemsworth, the rooks are busy again and I have seen rooks carrying twigs to their nests during the past week. Only three nests are visible from my window but there are several others in a nearby tree. Last summer, there appeared to be eight active nests. Some of these have been blown down during the winter and I expect that some or all will be replaced.

Fieldfares and redwings aren’t very numerous now. I saw a group of seven fieldfares flying over on the 9th, as I cycled to school, and two redwings flew over the centre of Hemsworth today.

The relatively cold winter has certainly delayed the start of the frogs’ breeding season. In recent years, frog-spawn has appeared in some local ponds as early as the first week or two of February.
